Choices, Decisions, Dedication, and Discipline

Every moment we are facing choices, and our actions reflect our decision in that moment.

I've come to realize there is a difference between deciding something "for now" and making a non-negotiable decision.

This is a muscle many learn to utilize early in life, but most have some area of their life where they don't make a decision, but instead continue to choose in the moment.

There are many examples in my life where I have fallen into that trap - be it yo-yo nutrition/dieting and fitness, career and future goals waffling, or just losing my focus even if the goal was there, this is a problem that has plagued me for many years.

Late last year (2021) I came across a podcast that reshaped my life.

The concept was simple - "Win the Day," a simple way of approaching a daily critical task list. You choose your tasks every day that will help you reach your bigger goals. Simple - yet it can be completely profound.

Daily you make choices - those choices can either move you towards your goals, keep you in your current status, or they can set you back. Every choice will move those proverbial needles one way or another.

Choices will lead to decisions. Decisions all pushing you toward a goal will begin to create dedication. Someone dedicated to a goal will keep fighting towards it, even when life throws them curve ball after curve ball. Dedication is a lot harder to break, but without the final element, it cannot produce results on its own.

Dedication must be supported by discipline. Discipline is the element that will make or break that goal, dream, and any future successes. This is where the successful and the mediocre get separated. When we are mediocre our discipline wavers - we go through waves of it, but it falls by the wayside for a variety of reasons. Then we'll pick it back up, only to drop it again. We have not developed real discipline.

All of these roll into our vision for ourselves. When we combine our choices, decisions, dedication, and discipline under a clear vision, we will win. It will take time, a lot of hard work, falling on our faces and getting back up, pivots and redirects, but we will win.

It's a long road, and motivation is as fickle as the weather. Every day we must choose and decide to remain dedicated to our goals, exercising discipline to bring our vision to life.

You have a choice. Will your decision be driven by your dedication and developed discipline, supporting your vision - or will you choose to fail? Choose wisely.
